AFL-CIO Releases Policy Recommendations to Obama Team

Lawyers Coordinating Committee (LCC) members, including LAPM&K attorneys Dan Livingston, Gregg Adler, Tom Meiklejohn and Elizabeth Conklin, contributed to the AFL-CIO's transition planning work through discussions at the 2008 annual conference on wage and hour reforms, and on overall transition planning for a new administration.  In addition, the LCC embarked on an NLRB reform project to identify priority areas for possible reform, through decision making, rulemaking, or internal administrative practice, under a friendlier NLRB.

Close to a year ago, the AFL-CIO began to work with its affiliates to develop a policy agenda for the first day, first 100 days, first year, and first term of an Obama administration, and to identify key Executive Branch positions that need to be filled.  Close to 20 working groups focused on issues ranging from labor standards to labor law, safety and health, corporate governance, civil rights, international trade, and more, and their policy recommendations were shared with the Obama transition team early on and have formed the foundation for numerous discussions that have taken place between the AFL-CIO, its affiliates, and the Obama transition team.  Numerous agency review and policy teams have met with the AFL-CIO and its affiliates over the past few weeks, including but not limited to the DOL Office of the Solicitor, the NLRB, OSHA, Retirement and Pensions, Employment Standards (Wage and Hour), Mine Safety and Health, Federal Employees, Union Financial Reporting, Job Training, the National Mediation Board, and Transportation. The AFL-CIO is also working closely with the Obama transition team in generating names of qualified nominees to judicial appointments.
